Worldometers - Real Time World Statistics

This web site updates in real time various statistics such as current world population, births, deaths, things like that. But it also has some more interesting ones such as "lightning strikes to the earth this year", and "Military spending worldwide this year
(in millions of US Dollars)" For those that are skeptical, (as I was) can check out how they come up with their numbers
here. Obviously the numbers aren't 100% accurate, are any statistics really? Never the less, it's an interesting way of viewing them. There's something very humanizing about watching the counter for cancer deaths click over every ten seconds, or the counter for abortions every two. Link.

Twenty-First Century Gold Mine

From Gizmodo.( Via, Yahoo News.)
"China isn't the only nation dismantling used electronics to get at the gold, copper and silver inside. This trend, called "urban mining", is even more profitable in the current market where precious metals are trading close to their all-time high. For example, a ton of ore from a gold mine gives about 5 grams of gold, but a ton of cellphones gives 150 grams of gold. Why would Japan be into this trend? Because their country has few natural resources outside of perverted old dudes, but if they stack up all the cellphones owned by their citizens, they could probably make a pile as big as Mt. Fuji."

Jakob Trollback Rethinks The Music Video

This one comes from an amazing site TED.com TED is a invitation only conference that happens every year to spread, to put it simply, good, interesting ideas. And every week they update there website with new talks. I've defiantly spent hours on the site already, and will probably spend many more.
"What would a music video look like if it were purely directed by the music? Not driven by a concept, nor by a desire to build an image, but purely as an expression of a great song? Designer Jakob Trollback shares the results of his experiment in the form. The song is "Moonlight in Glory," from David Byrne and Brian Eno's classic album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts"

Ashcroft Pwned By College Student On Waterboarding

Ashcroft spoke at Knox College, a nationally ranked, private liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois with students from 45 states and 44 countries. There were protests outside the hall, and many people obviously couldn't wait for question period. One girl in particular chose her words well. From FireDogLake (Via Daily Ko-s)

"ME: After WWII, the Tokyo Tribunal was basically the Nuremberg Trials for Japan. Many Japanese leaders were put on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity, including torture. And among the tortures listed was the "water treatment," which we nowadays call waterboarding...
ASHCROFT: (interrupting) This is a speech, not a question. I don't mind, but it's not a question.
ME: It will be, sir, just give me a moment. The judgment describes this water treatment, and I quote, "the victim was bound or otherwise secured in a prone position; and water was forced through his mouth and nostrils into his lungs and stomach." One man, Yukio Asano, was sentenced to fifteen years hard labor by the allies for waterboarding American troops to obtain information. Since Yukio Asano was trying to get information to help defend his country--exactly what you, Mr. Ashcroft, say is acceptible for Americans to do--do you believe that his sentence was unjust? (boisterous applause and shouts of "Good question!")
ASHCROFT: (angrily) Now, listen here. You're comparing apples and oranges, apples and oranges. We don't do anything like what you described.
ME: I'm sorry, I was under the impression that we still use the method of putting a cloth over someone's face and pouring water down their throat...
ASHCROFT: (interrupting, red-faced, shouting) Pouring! Pouring! Did you hear what she said? "Putting a cloth over someone's face and pouring water on them." That's not what you said before! Read that again, what you said before!
ME: Sir, other reports of the time say...
ASHCROFT: (shouting) Read what you said before! (cries of "Answer her fucking question!" from the audience) Read it!
ME: (firmly) Mr. Ashcroft, please answer the question.
ASHCROFT: (shouting) Read it back!
ME: "The victim was bound or otherwise secured in a prone position; and water was forced through his mouth and nostrils into his lungs and stomach."
ASHCROFT: (shouting) You hear that? You hear it? "Forced!" If you can't tell the difference between forcing and pouring...does this college have an anatomy class? If you can't tell the difference between forcing and pouring...
ME: (firmly and loudly) Mr. Ashcroft, do you believe that Yukio Asano's sentence was unjust? Answer the question. (pause)
ASHCROFT: (more restrained) It's not a fair question; there's no comparison. Next question! (loud chorus of boos from the audience)"

Obama's Feeling Like A Pimp

I really, really enjoyed this.

Obama Loses PA, But The War's Over Anyway.

Now that my boy Ron Paul is out (pissed off). I guess it's time to focus on the only chance the world has left, Obama. I'm happy to post this video that explains why the race is over for Hillary, and the Bush-Clinton Crime Family.

The Art of Bowman and Omy Gallery

Bowman's work has fascinated me since I first saw it hanging in Omy gallery on a sunny summer day almost 2 years ago. Layered textiles under oil paint detailed glass give his work and unmistakable look. I've tried to keep up with his work by making regular visits to Omy, but have found his online portfolio to be the best way to check in on what Bowman has been up to lately.
enjoy......

Why I Think the World Should Act....

This is a very broad statement. The world is so concerned with who is right and who is wrong regardless of the issue at hand. I have come to use whats called the precautionary principle to make the case for change...

"The precautionary principle is a moral and political principle which states that if an action or policy might cause severe or irreversible harm to the public, in the absence of a scientific consensus that harm would not ensue, the burden of proof falls on those who would advocate taking the action."
C.J. Tickner

For example, not having 100% scientific assurance that greenhouse gas emissions are causing global warming is not an excuse to do nothing about it. If we do something about it and it turns out that wasn't the problem we lose money. If we don't do anything, and that is the problem, we could be in big trouble.

DEEP...THINK ABOUT IT.

Montreal's Hatchmatik with some great remixes. I'm all over the Thunderheist track.

Global Dimming

Global warming continues to be the number one environmental concern of our day. It turns out that the full impact of global warming may be masked by what is being called global dimming. In short, global dimming is the reduction in the amount of incoming solar radiation reaching the surface of the earth. It is caused by an increase in particulate matter (such as aerosols and dust, ie pollution) blocking out a percentage of incoming solar radiation. Whats happening is that the full affect of global warming is being counteracted by the cooling affect of blocking out the sun. The problem is that we are now cleaning up the particulate matter in the atmosphere but not the greenhouse gases so global temperatures may actually go up faster than ever expected. These five links are too the BBCs special on global dimming. Be aware the presentation is a little over the top.

Who Doesnt Love the Theremin?

The theremin, invented in 1919, was one of the earliest electronic instruments. It remains one of the only instruments you don't need to physically touch in order to play. The distance of you hand from the vertical antenna controls pitch, while the horizontal antenna controls volume. Check out this guys rendition of Don't Worry, Be Happy. GOLD JERRY!

Clothing That Can Recharge Your Cellphone.

From BBG:
Within a decade or two, we might all be wearing clothing with built-in USB ports capable of recharging our gadgets, according to researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology:
The fiber-based nanogenerator would be a simple and economical way to harvest energy from physical movement,” said Zhong Lin Wang, a Regents professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. “If we can combine many of these fibers in double or triple layers in clothing, we could provide a flexible, foldable and wearable power source that, for example, would allow people to generate their own electrical current while walking.”Link.

Lolla Lives Webisode Series

One of my favorite musical artist, Perry Farrell, and North America's most renowned street artist, Shepard Fairey, come together in these clever and socially conscious webisodes to discuss art, society, and life in general. Watch all five and enjoy!

Old School Goodness #1

This track by Dave Armstrong & Redroche is full of old school, hard hitting, cheesy goodness. Vocals are done by H-Boogie. The track isn't really that old school hitting speakers in the summer of 2007.

Graffiti Research Lab

The Graffiti Research Lab has developed a "laser-tag"
system to project images onto buildings and other
public surfaces. Regardless of the fact it causes
no physical damage to the buildings, how much do you
want to bet it's still illegal.

Shepard Fairey's covers for Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984

From the man who brought you the "Obey Giant", as well as many cool t-shirts and art prints, comes two kick ass book covers for Penguin Books newest release of Orwell's most widely known works, "1984" & "Animal Farm". Although it's not musical I think the concept may give birth to a new incarnation of the "Mashup".Link.

Organized and Harmonized- New Tune #1

Alex Metric is sounding good. Might go see him spin in Barcelona on May 8th...anybody down? Enjoy my first new tune post and expect a series of old school favorites as well.

Alex Metric - In Your Machine

And Another One.

This is good. I've recently had some friends express interest in posting on my humble little blog. The more the merrier. To be honest i have no idea what to expect from Clark, he did mention posting pictures of his junk, which i highly discouraged.

((d-_-b)) Sound Box #06: New MSTRKRFT

Toronto's beat boys have released a few new tunes, to lukewarm response from the blogosphere. But for me, the boys have done it again. The n.o.r.e track kind of comes off as a mash up, but it still makes me...er...bounce.

Banksy Strikes Again!

Socially conscious graffiti artist Banksy has created his biggest work to date. Two stories high and done right under a CCTV camera, his latest piece is a social commentary on the state of big brother in London. To pull this one off he had to erect a scaffold, and create his work under a tarp. All this from inside a secured parking lot. Which means someone had to give permission to erect the scaffold, although I doubt they knew his intentions. You'll remember he's the guy who painted the two cops making out. I hope to see more from him in the future. Link.

Texaco - A Real Winner!!

Do you ever think of environmental impact of extracting oil? My favorite is the Shell commercial showing an Alberta oil sands engineer with an Aboriginal elder. Apparently they are working together to restore the soil to it's original environmental condition. Tell me how the soil can be the same after you rip it out of the ground blast it with chemicals to get the oil out and put it back. Check out the environmental practices of Texaco when oil is extracted far from the public eye.

The Visible Music Interface - TENORI-ON

The TENORI-ON is another tool Dj's can use to spice up their performance. Its a 16 x 16 LED button matrix music sequencer that enables you to create beats with the touch of a finger while watching the tune come together right in front of your eyes. There is nothing else like this in the world but, as of yet, the songs people are making sound like amateurs using Fruity Loops. I'm sure after a little bit of time people will have mastered the new instrument the tunes will get much better.

Great Canadian Laugh Off: Finals Tonight

My friend Chris Forbes, who came all the way from Scotland, is in the finals tonight after killing the competition in the semi-finals. Here's hoping he takes the $25,000 Grand Prize. While it means I didn't Get to see A-TRAK, it was well worth it.
