Human Cloning Approved In Austrailia

"The Australian government has issued the world’s first licence for the cloning of humans, reports the Reuters news agency. Sydney IVF has been given permission to clone human embryos in order to harvest stem cells. Because these cells have the ability to transform into cells of all types, they are potentially invaluable in the treatment of some diseases.

Sydney IVF will get access to 7,200 ovules. But its work will be monitored by the National council of Australia for health and medical research.

The Council’s chairman, John Findlay, has stressed that scientists only have the right to work with embryos. They are banned from passing to the next stage – inserting a cloned embryo into a womb.

Australia removed the ban on cloning in 2006. Nevertheless, laws remain in place prohibiting human cloning for the purposes of reproduction." Link.

Noel Gallagher of Oasis attacked on stage at V-Fest in Toronto

Wow, it's never a dull moment for any Oasis show whether the incident with Jay-Z at Glastonbury or across the Atlantic in Toronto for the Virgin Festival. I am unsure if karma had something to do with it or whether the attacker just wanted his 15 minutes of fame but nevertheless what kind of security even allowed the guy to worm himself on to the stage.

I just remembered, a friend of ours was just given two V-fest tickets an hour before Oasis performed. Hopefully she made it on time to witness this.

How Rediculos is this story from CBC

Court quashes dad's grounding of 12-year-old daughter

Last Updated: Thursday, June 19, 2008 | 9:59 AM ET

A father plans to appeal after a Quebec court ruled that he didn't have the right to punish his 12-year-old daughter by barring her from a school trip.

Quebec Superior Court Judge Suzanne Tessier ruled Friday that the girl should be allowed to attend the three-day trip within Quebec this week.

The father's lawyer, Kim Beaudoin, speaks to CBC Newsworld about the case. (CBC)Initially, the father forbade his daughter from going online after the Grade 6 student posted photos on a dating site, the Globe and Mail reported in its Thursday edition.

The girl's parents are divorced, and after she had an alleged row with her stepmother, her father barred her from going on a school trip to mark the class's graduation from elementary school, the newspaper reported.

"When he said, 'OK, it's final. You're not going,' she smacked the door, left and went to live with her mother," the father's lawyer, Kim Beaudoin, told CBC News.

Last Wednesday, the father received a motion petitioning the court to overturn the punishment.

Two days later, the judge ruled the punishment was too severe because the girl had already been sufficiently disciplined, Beaudoin said.

Beaudoin said the judge also said there was no reason for the punishment to stand, since the girl was now living with her mother, even though the father has custody.

Beaudoin said the father, who has four children, was "devastated," especially since the ruling came days before Father's Day.

Court has role: lawyer

But the judge's decision was not just a case of a child going the court to get out of trouble, said Miriam Grassby, a Quebec family lawyer who has spoken with the various attorneys involved.

Under Quebec family law, it is not uncommon for a child in a high-conflict situation between two parents to have an attorney appointed to protect his or her best interests, as was the case here, Grassby said.

"In Quebec, no matter who has custody, we have joint parental authority," Grassby told CBC News on Thursday. "There are issues of discipline where both parents have to agree, and if they don't, we will have a place" to resolve the issue in court.

The attorney representing the child had been chosen and agreed to by both parents, she noted.

"The court is there to be an objective third party, and these children who are in these high-conflict situations need the protection of the court," Grassby said.

"I think we could presume the judge had good judgment in the fact that she read the statements and found out what both parents were saying, and that the child was punished at least once for that, and this was excessive punishment."

While Beaudoin said the case is a first for her, she doubts it will trigger a flood of similar claims.

"Usually children have lots of respect for their parents and they wouldn't go there," said Beaudoin.

She said the judge stressed that the case was an exception.

"But for a field trip, I'm thinking this is a big exception," she said.

Tate Modern: Londons International Modern and Contemporary Art Museum

The last stop on my journey through Europe was in London. By pure chance I visited the Tate Modern Museum during their Bank holiday festival for the long weekend. Of interest to me was the street art exhibition. "In the first commission to use the building's iconic river façade, and the first major public museum display of street art in London, Tate Modern presented the work of six internationally acclaimed artists whose work is intricately linked to the urban environment: Blu from Bologna, Italy; the artist collective Faile from New York, USA; JR from Paris, France; Nunca and Os Gemeos, both from Sao Paulo, Brazil and Sixeart from Barcelona, Spain." To close out the festival New York artists Graffiti Research Lab lead a workshop for young people, allowing people to project art onto the museum.

As you will see in some of my pictures the Nissan Qashqai Challenge (professional mountain bike jumping) was going on. This made for a very cool experience with good vibes. Another treat was the many Banksy pieces under the bridges and buildings around the museum.

Worldometers - Real Time World Statistics

This web site updates in real time various statistics such as current world population, births, deaths, things like that. But it also has some more interesting ones such as "lightning strikes to the earth this year", and "Military spending worldwide this year
(in millions of US Dollars)" For those that are skeptical, (as I was) can check out how they come up with their numbers
here. Obviously the numbers aren't 100% accurate, are any statistics really? Never the less, it's an interesting way of viewing them. There's something very humanizing about watching the counter for cancer deaths click over every ten seconds, or the counter for abortions every two. Link.

Twenty-First Century Gold Mine

From Gizmodo.( Via, Yahoo News.)
"China isn't the only nation dismantling used electronics to get at the gold, copper and silver inside. This trend, called "urban mining", is even more profitable in the current market where precious metals are trading close to their all-time high. For example, a ton of ore from a gold mine gives about 5 grams of gold, but a ton of cellphones gives 150 grams of gold. Why would Japan be into this trend? Because their country has few natural resources outside of perverted old dudes, but if they stack up all the cellphones owned by their citizens, they could probably make a pile as big as Mt. Fuji."

Jakob Trollback Rethinks The Music Video

This one comes from an amazing site TED.com TED is a invitation only conference that happens every year to spread, to put it simply, good, interesting ideas. And every week they update there website with new talks. I've defiantly spent hours on the site already, and will probably spend many more.
"What would a music video look like if it were purely directed by the music? Not driven by a concept, nor by a desire to build an image, but purely as an expression of a great song? Designer Jakob Trollback shares the results of his experiment in the form. The song is "Moonlight in Glory," from David Byrne and Brian Eno's classic album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts"

Ashcroft Pwned By College Student On Waterboarding

Ashcroft spoke at Knox College, a nationally ranked, private liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois with students from 45 states and 44 countries. There were protests outside the hall, and many people obviously couldn't wait for question period. One girl in particular chose her words well. From FireDogLake (Via Daily Ko-s)

"ME: After WWII, the Tokyo Tribunal was basically the Nuremberg Trials for Japan. Many Japanese leaders were put on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity, including torture. And among the tortures listed was the "water treatment," which we nowadays call waterboarding...
ASHCROFT: (interrupting) This is a speech, not a question. I don't mind, but it's not a question.
ME: It will be, sir, just give me a moment. The judgment describes this water treatment, and I quote, "the victim was bound or otherwise secured in a prone position; and water was forced through his mouth and nostrils into his lungs and stomach." One man, Yukio Asano, was sentenced to fifteen years hard labor by the allies for waterboarding American troops to obtain information. Since Yukio Asano was trying to get information to help defend his country--exactly what you, Mr. Ashcroft, say is acceptible for Americans to do--do you believe that his sentence was unjust? (boisterous applause and shouts of "Good question!")
ASHCROFT: (angrily) Now, listen here. You're comparing apples and oranges, apples and oranges. We don't do anything like what you described.
ME: I'm sorry, I was under the impression that we still use the method of putting a cloth over someone's face and pouring water down their throat...
ASHCROFT: (interrupting, red-faced, shouting) Pouring! Pouring! Did you hear what she said? "Putting a cloth over someone's face and pouring water on them." That's not what you said before! Read that again, what you said before!
ME: Sir, other reports of the time say...
ASHCROFT: (shouting) Read what you said before! (cries of "Answer her fucking question!" from the audience) Read it!
ME: (firmly) Mr. Ashcroft, please answer the question.
ASHCROFT: (shouting) Read it back!
ME: "The victim was bound or otherwise secured in a prone position; and water was forced through his mouth and nostrils into his lungs and stomach."
ASHCROFT: (shouting) You hear that? You hear it? "Forced!" If you can't tell the difference between forcing and pouring...does this college have an anatomy class? If you can't tell the difference between forcing and pouring...
ME: (firmly and loudly) Mr. Ashcroft, do you believe that Yukio Asano's sentence was unjust? Answer the question. (pause)
ASHCROFT: (more restrained) It's not a fair question; there's no comparison. Next question! (loud chorus of boos from the audience)"

Why I Think the World Should Act....

This is a very broad statement. The world is so concerned with who is right and who is wrong regardless of the issue at hand. I have come to use whats called the precautionary principle to make the case for change...

"The precautionary principle is a moral and political principle which states that if an action or policy might cause severe or irreversible harm to the public, in the absence of a scientific consensus that harm would not ensue, the burden of proof falls on those who would advocate taking the action."
C.J. Tickner

For example, not having 100% scientific assurance that greenhouse gas emissions are causing global warming is not an excuse to do nothing about it. If we do something about it and it turns out that wasn't the problem we lose money. If we don't do anything, and that is the problem, we could be in big trouble.

DEEP...THINK ABOUT IT.

Global Dimming

Global warming continues to be the number one environmental concern of our day. It turns out that the full impact of global warming may be masked by what is being called global dimming. In short, global dimming is the reduction in the amount of incoming solar radiation reaching the surface of the earth. It is caused by an increase in particulate matter (such as aerosols and dust, ie pollution) blocking out a percentage of incoming solar radiation. Whats happening is that the full affect of global warming is being counteracted by the cooling affect of blocking out the sun. The problem is that we are now cleaning up the particulate matter in the atmosphere but not the greenhouse gases so global temperatures may actually go up faster than ever expected. These five links are too the BBCs special on global dimming. Be aware the presentation is a little over the top.

Clothing That Can Recharge Your Cellphone.

From BBG:
Within a decade or two, we might all be wearing clothing with built-in USB ports capable of recharging our gadgets, according to researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology:
The fiber-based nanogenerator would be a simple and economical way to harvest energy from physical movement,” said Zhong Lin Wang, a Regents professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. “If we can combine many of these fibers in double or triple layers in clothing, we could provide a flexible, foldable and wearable power source that, for example, would allow people to generate their own electrical current while walking.”Link.

Banksy Strikes Again!

Socially conscious graffiti artist Banksy has created his biggest work to date. Two stories high and done right under a CCTV camera, his latest piece is a social commentary on the state of big brother in London. To pull this one off he had to erect a scaffold, and create his work under a tarp. All this from inside a secured parking lot. Which means someone had to give permission to erect the scaffold, although I doubt they knew his intentions. You'll remember he's the guy who painted the two cops making out. I hope to see more from him in the future. Link.
